Villa Principe Leopoldo, perched atop the fabled "Golden Hill" which dominates the city of Lugano, is named after Prince Frederic Leopold of Prussia, a distinguished cavalry general and member of the German Hohenzollern Dynasty, which ascended the throne of Prussia with Frederic William in 1701 and then became first rulers of the new German empire on its creation on 1871. Before becoming a hotel in 1986, the beautiful princely mansion bore witness to a hundred crowded years of history, welcoming as residents or guests many of the notables of the European aristocracy of the times. Prince Frederic Leopold, son of the general who had built the villa as his summer residence, lived in it until his death in 1931, preferring its higher location, greenery and sweeping views, to the lakeside Villa Favorita.
THE HOTEL: In the smart residential neighbourhood where Hermann Hesse lived, 2 km from down town Lugano, the Villa Principe Leopoldo, with the Residence Principe Leopoldo across the street, has moulded into an upmarket resort, amongst Lugano's finest accomodation. More Italian than Swiss in spirit, the resort comprises a two story Mediterranean Villa and a more modern residential building.
THE VILLA: The Villa is decorated in a versatile, middly post-modern style. Once home to Kaiser Wilhelm's brother-in-law, this historic Villa's common areas, guest rooms and gardens take maximum advantage of the superb lake and mountain views. Today the Villa has 37 air-conditioned large Suites, Junior Suites and Superiors rooms. They are all spacious with well co-ordinated decor and contemporary furnishing. Terraces either overlook the gardens or the lake and the city of Lugano. Heavy drapes and a wide confortable sofa separate the bedroom from the living-room area. Bathroom facilities are located in either one or two marble panelled rooms on either side of the hallway.
THE RESIDENCE: The Principe Leopoldo Residence façade has an impressive portico, which shows an eclect mix of Renaissance and Art Deco styling. Public space is limited but artistically so, with an ample, reserved reception area and the Café Leopoldo with a garden terrace. The 41 air-conditioned rooms of the Residence, completly renewed in 2001, are elegant and gracious, and overlook the garden or the park and have all the necessary tranquillity to please any guest looking for a thankful rest. They all have areas separated either by a floor level difference, separating the sleeping from the sitting area or sometimes with a separate bedroom. Each of the 78 junior-suites and apartaments features minibar, color TV, in-house video, radio, safe, individual controlled air conditioning. There are hair dryer, superb toiletries, thick terry bathrobes in the bathrooms. ISDN telephone and modem connections.
SWIMMING & FITNESS: The complex features 2 heated outdoor swimming-pools (may to september), sauna, solarium, whirlpool, fitness room with a range of cardio-vascular lifecycle equipment, 2 tennis courts with synthetic grass, massage on request and for sports enthusiasts, a whole range of possibilities from horse riding to water-skiing. Golf is the major attraction of the region, with no less than 43 golf courses in the triangle formed by Lugano-Milan-Bergamo and the hotel has arranged special playing arrangements with 5 beautiful golfs located in our neighbouring Italy (Carimate, Monticello, Varese, Golf dei Laghi, Le Robinie), 30 to 45 minutes away.
