Des Balances 4*, Luzern

An impressive history:

There was an inn at the present site of the Hotel des Balances back in the year 1200. Its location and immediate vicinity to the Fish and Wine Market (Weinmarkt square) was always an admirable spot. Today's four star hotel experienced many exciting and important times over the years.

Well known members of Lucerne's society claimed it as their meeting place and lent the building a special note. Many illustrious guests found their way to the Hotel des Balances, as its been called since 1807. Among them is the famous Irish poet, G. B. Shaw.

Nobility came as well. Princess Louise of Baden and Queen Wilhelmine of the Netherlands were regular guests in Des Balances. Hotel directors were successful in this great place.

Jean Haecky and Fritz Rindlisbacher, both excellent hosts, left behind a grand tradition of creating and celebrating the joy of gourmet cooking.

The historical hotel doesn't only show its best side within but also on the exterior. The paintings on the facade — done in the style of famous painter Hans Holbein — are among the most photographed subjects in Lucerne. Lucerne's Emil Steinberger, famous as «Emil», began his career here in the 60's. He performed this very first production, «Emil and the 40 robbers» on the Balances' stage.

Today the hotel enjoys the reputation of a gourmet hotel with highest quality rooms in one of the best locations right in the heart of Lucerne.
